A Comparison among Haloperidol vs Carbamazepine-Haloperidol vs Valproic Acid-Haloperidol Treatment in Negative Symptom Schizophrenia

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical effects of carbamazepine and haloperidol vs valproic acid and haloperidol vs haloperidol alone in negative symptom schizophrenia. The subjects of this study consisted of 45 patients with
chronic
schizophrenia according to DSM-III-R criteria and had predominant negative symptoms evaluated by PANSS. The subjects were divided into 3 groups. randomly. Group A was treated with fixed dose of haloperidol combined carbamazepine up to 1000mg/day,
Group
B was treated with fixed dose of haloperidol combined valproic acid up to 1000mg/day and Group C was treated with haloperidol only. During the study, 4 subjects were dropped out because of severe side effects and I subject was dropped out because
of
early discharge. The remained 40 subjects were assessed with BPRS and PANSS negative scale. There was no significant difference among the three groups in total and subscales of BPRS, and negative scale of PANSS. This result did not support that
combined
treatment with carbamazepine and haloperidol, and with valproic acid and haloperidol could be more effective than treatment with haloperidol alone on negative symptom schizophrenia.
